Quilt along #33

Still doing Paisley in Leah Day's Quilt Along Wednesdays. This design is called Pointy Paisley.

Lots of backtracking and like the Snake Paisley I found that I had lots of very awkward spaces to fill.  Strange really, I did not seem to have the same problem with the Lava Paisley...somehow that sat better with my brain and flowed much more evenly.
I think in this sample I possibly went around the shapes too many times and the design gets lost a bit...I think I prefer it a little bit smaller and more defined. Never mind, good practice.

Also practised swirls with hooks while I was at it and was impressed. After a whole week of doodling the shape and trying to fill up areas I was able to translate this into my square without too much of a difficulty. Goes to show the power of doodling your design first...

My 'practice quilt is taking shape, only a few more squares left before I will have to go into the sashing

Until next time

  1. Love all your FMQ! You've really kept up so well and all your samples look great. I wish I could do half as well as you! Great job!

    1. Thanks Rosemary. Yes my goal for this year was to practice FMQ...and that is what I mainly have done this year. So not much else has been produced but I must say I have learned more in the last couple of months than I have in the last few years. I think the quilt along has been absolutely fantastic in seeing what other quilters struggle with, have some of those questions answered and just stitching along and trying different things.

  2. Your echo quilting is so beautiful and perfectly spaced!

  3. Your swirl design is lovely it reminds me of dolphins I love it! Good idea with the practice quilt I may have to try this :)

  4. Thanks. I just tried the swirls in the inner border yesterday and it worked like an absolute dream. No marking, no stress and looks great...goes very quickly and presents no issues in the corners. My kind of design. And yes, the practice quilt has been handy and has made following the quilt along very easy.

  5. I had the same struggle with pointy paisley. Love your quilt!!! Makes me want to get going on putting mine together

  6. I know its weird how somes designs work well for some people and others don't. This worked well for me but I had hard time with Lava paisley. Its so true, it all depends on my our brains are wired.

I absolutely love your swirls with hook. looks awesome!
