Blockbase Sew Along #2

This is Block #2 in the Blockbase Sew Along that is hosted by the EQ blog 'Behind the Mouse. Now I must say, this was not for the fainthearted...very tricky indeed. The block is # 2741 in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns  and is called Golda, Gem Star.

Here is my block

What a beautiful block...but I cannot imagine doing a whole quilt of that. It took a while to piece together and as you can imagine matching the points was a bit of an adventure.

My block measures 8" finished size and while I am a bit shy of that measurement on one side it turned out pretty ok overall. I constructed it as suggested in wedges, however pieced sections of the wedges together using foundation piecing. That worked really well. I did not use paper for the foundation piecing but paper thin interfacing which was left in the block to provide added stability.

Linking up to the Blockbase Sew Along to have a look at the blocks other quilters have put up.

Until next time

  1. Lovely block Karin and I love the choice of red and white. If I was going to make a lot of these blocks I would probably opt for hand piecing and do it as a travelling project. Take care.

    1. Not sure I would have the patience for hand piecing and probably could not trust myself to get the points right.

  2. No, it is not perfect but I am really happy with it. Took me days to make.

  3. Hi Karin. I´ve done mine all on foundation. It was the only way I could see that could help me to fit all the points. Enjoyed doing it and the most difficult thing was to find out how to split the foundation sections. After some tries I did it with the great help of EQ7. Sewing the block was then very easy.
How will be next? Tomorrow will know! Happy sewing.

    1. Yes, I also used EQ7 to work out the foundation sections. Could not have done it with templates, I think. The points would not have matched. I am hoping they choose something a bit easier.

  4. I think your block turned out beautifully! We all need to challenge ourselves once in a while, right? :)

    1. I was pleased and excited about how this turned out. Must admit I had some doubts whether I could do this block...and I am not really an inexperienced quilter. this was a great challenge.
